Verb Phrases

In Kannada, like in other Dravidian languages the simple verb takes many forms based on the circumstances by attaching itself with modal auxiliary verbs,negative forms to convey various moods like positive ,negative, directive statements.In this note lets see how the root verb Hogu ( Go) is modified based on the circumstances.

Case 1:  To give a command -

You go - Neenu hogu  (or) Neevu hogiri.

Case 2:  Modal forms

He must go now - Avanu iga hoga beku

Case 3: To give a command in the negative

Don't go there - Alli hoga baaradu.

Case 4: Stating a wish

Shall we go to cinema ? - Naavu cinemage hogONNa ?

Case 5: Simple statement in the negative

He did not go to cinema. - Avanu cinemakke hogalilla.

Case 6:  Conditional statement

It will be good if he goes there - Avaru a lli hOdare chennagi iruthe.

Case 7:

He went there and came. - Avanu alli hogbiTTu banda(nu).

Kannada Phrases with Root Verb - Maathadu ( Speak )

1. Nee enaadru maathaadu - You speak something.

2. Naanu yaavudru bagge maathaadu beku ? - What should I speak about ?.

3. Yaake maathadutaideera ? - Why are you speaking ?.

4. Yaaru jot he maathadutheera ? - Whom are you speaking with ?.

5.  Nenne naanu phone alli amma jothe maathadide. - Yesterday I spoke with my mother over phone.

6.  Naanu naaLe amma jothe maathadidini - I will speak with mother tomorrow.

7. Neenu maathadideya ? - Have you spoken ?.

8. Neenu maathaditaideera ? / maathaditaideeya ? - Are you speaking ?.

9. Neenu maathaditaidra ? - Were you speaking ?.

10. Neenu maathaadu - You speak.

11. Nanage kannada maathaadakke baralla - I do not know to speak Kannada.

12. Avanu  maathadutaane - He speaks.

13. AvaLu  maathadutaaLe - She speaks.

14. Avanu maathaditaidaane - He is speaking.
