Kannada Conversation Phrases - Part V - Traveling by Auto

This post will concentrate on phrases that we use when we converse with auto/cab wallahs. This post is written as a conversation between an auto driver (AD) and a passenger (P)

1. P: Are you coming to Indiranagar ?

Indiranagar(ge) barutheera ?

2. AD: Ok Sir , I will come.

Ok sir, Barutini.

3. P: Will you turn on the meter ?

Meter haaktheera ?

4. P: How much does that cost ?

Eshtu aagathe ?

5. AD: It will cost you 200 rs.

200 Rs aagathe sir.

6. P: 200 is quite high. You are asking too much.

200 swalpa jaasthiri. Thumba jaasthi heLtaideera.

7.AD: Cost of petrol has increased, thats why Im asking so much.

Petrol bele thumba jaasthiaagide , adakke naanu meter mele keLtaidini.

8. P: Ok, will you come for 150 rs ?

Seri, 150 ge barutheera.

9. AD: Ok give me 160 sir.

Seri 160 kodiri.

10. AD: Where do you want to go in Indiranagar - cmh road or 100 ft road ?

Indiranagaralli elli hobeku sir ? cmh roadaa 100 ft roadaa ?

11. AD: Which way do you want me to go sir ?

Yaava kadeyinda hoga beku sir?

12. P:You go via the route that you normally take.

Neevu maamulaagi yaava dharinalli hogtheera ,adhe kadeyinda hogi

13. AD: I will go via Jeevanbhima nagar.

Naanu Jeevan bhima nagar hog bittu hogtini.

14. P: Isnt that a longer route ?

Adhu thumba udda route alva ?

15. AD: Sir can you tell me the route I should take ?

Neeve heLi , ellinda hogbeku antha.

16. P:You go to BTP , from there you take the road to Sapna book house.

Neevu BTP hogi,allinda Sapna book house  kadege hogi.

17. AD: Sir , that route is not good . The road is not good. It will cost you extra 10 Rs.

Sir , a dhaarinalli road thumba kacha ide. Hathu rupaiya extra kodi.

18. P: Oh I cant take this anymore.I have no time to waste. Dont argue.I will give you 150. Tell me if you are  coming or not.I shall take another auto.

Naaninda aagallari.Nanage bega hogbeku.Vaadisu beda.Naanu 150 kodutini. Neevu barutheera ilva heLi.Neevu baralla antha naanu bere auto togontini.

19. AD: Ok Sir , Give me 150 . Come.

Ok Sir, 150 kodi.Banni

20. P: Drive slowly.Dont you see the red signal ?

Swalpa nidaanavaagi hogi.Red signal kaanistilva ?

21. P: One of my friend is also coming. You go via DRDO.

Nanna friend obru kooda baruthaare.Neevu DRDO kadeyinda BTP hogi. Rasteyinda avara pick up maadu beku.


22.P: Please dont smoke.

Smoke maadu beda.

23. P: Can you reduce the volume ?

Radio volume swalpa kadime maadutheera ?

24. AD: Sir I want to fill petrol. Can you give 100 Rs.

Sir ,petrol haak beku. 100 rs kodutheera

Here comes the important piece :)

22. P: The meter is running so fast.It costs 150 rs from CV Ramannagar to Indiranagar.Now itself the meter is showing 100 Rs. We have not coverred even half the distance. I wont give the money shown in the meter. I will give only 150 Rs.

Kannada Conversational Phrases - Part IV - Trip to Hotel

In this post we shall see some typical conversations that happens in a hotel.The words/phrases within the parenthesis adds more clarity to the sentence but we might/could ignore them while speaking.
It is typically written as a conversation between the customer and the waiter.


1. Sir , What do you want ( to eat ) ?
    Sir , Nimage ( tinnokke ) yen(u) beku.

2. Can you get me 2 idlis and a vada ?
    Iradu idli , ondhu vada kodutheera ?.

3. How many idlis come in a plate?
   Ondu platenalli eshtu idli baratte. [It is idligaLu for the plural , however we tend to skip the grammar ]

4. Why is the idli not hot?
    Yaake idli bisi illa.

5. Sorry sir, I will get you some hot idlis.
    Sorry sir,Naanu bisi idli tandu koduthini.

6.Why idli is very salty?
   Yaake idli thumba  uppaagide? [ uppu - salt - u as in Utah ]

7. Can you get me some sugar / salt ?
    Swalpa sakkare/uppu kodutheera ?

8. Give me sugar/salt.
    Sakkare/uppu kodi.

9. Can you keep some subji ?
    Swalpa sabji haaktheera ?

10. Give me some subji.
    Swalpa palya kodi.

11. Can you turn on the fan?
   Fan shuru maadtheera ?

12. Can you get me the bill?
     Bill kodutheera ?

13. You have wrongly added dose to the bill.I did not order for the dosa.

In this post we will see some phrases that we use often while travelling by bus.This will concentrate more on the spoken kannada.

Prepositions in Kannada - Part I

A preposition helps to show the noun's relation to other words in the sentence. In this post we shall see some of the prepositions in Kannada and their day to day usage.

1. Since -> inda


I stay in Bangalore since 2001.  --> Naanu bengalurudalli 2001 inda iddiini.


2. Near -> hathira


My son's school is near to my house. --> Nanna maganna shaale nanna maneya hattira ide.


3.Than -> kintha


This work is better than that work. --> Ii  kelasa Aa kelasakinta olleyadhu.


4.Except -> bittu


I did everything except washing clothes --> Naanu batte tholeyuvudhu bittu bere ella kelesa maadidde.


5.On / Up / Over -> mele


Please keep the cup on the table. --> Dayavittu meji mele cuppannu haaku.


The monkey climbed up the tree. --> Kothi marada mele hattittu.


The bird flew over the house. --> Hakki maneya mele haarittu.



6.Last -> hoda

Last week plumber came to our house. --> Hoda vaara plumber namma manege bandanu.


7.When / by the time / during -> aaga


I was sleeping when my husband came home. --> Nanna gandana bandaaga naanu malgutaidde.


I had slept by the time when my husband came from office. --> Nanna ganda officeinda bandaaga naanu malagidde.


8.Usually -> maamulaagi


Usually I eat bread,butter and jam for breakfast. --> Naanu maamulaagi beLige ootakke bread , benne mattu jam tinnuthene.


9. But -> Adhare


But I had idly and chutney yesterday. --> Adhare nenne idly mattu chutney tinde.


10. With -> Jothe


Will you come with me ?. -> Neenu nanna jothe baruthiya ?


11. Around -> Suttha


A squirrel can go around the tree. -> ALilu marada suttha hoga bahudu.


12. Behind -> Hinde


A squirrel can go behind the tree. -> ALilu marada hinde hoga bahudu.


13. Towards -> Kade


The hunter aimed towards the sparrow. -> Bettaikaara gubbatti kade guri itta.


14. Under -> Kelage


The book was under the chair. -> Pustaka kurichiya kelage ittu.

Future tense in Kannada with root verb Hogu(Go)

In this post we shall concentrate on the future tense.


I Person / Singular


I will go -> Naanu hoguvenu.  This is grammatically correct sentence . However while speaking this becomes Naanu hogtini. 


Naanu naaLe marketge hogtini.  - I will go to market tomorrow.

Naanu evatthu marketge hogtini - I will go to market today.

I will be going -> Naanu hog-ta-iruvenu ( or ) hog-ta-iruthini.


I will have gone -> Naanu hog-iru-tini.



I Person / Plural


We will go to school -> Naavu shaalege hoguvevu. While speaking  this becomes Naavu shaalege 
hogtivi.

We will be going -> Naavu hog-ta-iruvevu.


We will have gone -> Naavu hog-iru-vevu.



II Person / Singular


You will go -> Neenu  hogtheeya. 


You will be going --> Neenu hogu-ta-iruthiya.


You will have gone -> Neenu hogu-ir(u)-thiya.




II Person / Plural or with respect

You will go -> Neevu hogtheera.

You will go -> Neevu hogu-iru-thira .


You will be going -> Neevu hogu-ta-iruthira.



III Person / Male / Singular


He will go -> Avanu hoguvanu


He will be going -> Avanu hogu-ta-iruvanu or hogu-tiruvanu

Present Tense in Kannada with Root verb Hogu (Go)

In the previous post we saw the usage of Hogu in the past.In this post we shall see its usage in the present tense.



I Person / Singular 

I  go -> Naanu hogu-ttene which is grammatically correct sentence. However in spoken language this becomes hogtini. 

Naanu hogtini.


Iam going -> Naanu hog-ta-iddini.



I Person / Plural


We go -> Naavu hog-utteve. Like the I Person / Singular the spoken language version of this statement is Naavu 
hogtivi.

We are going -> Naavu hogu-ta-iddeve.



II Person / Singular


You go -> Neenu hogu. This is without any respect, This can be used with close friends, or with children.  


You keep going --> Neenu hog-ta-iru.

You are going --> Neenu hog-ta-idiya.



II Person / Plural or with respect


You go -> Neevu hogi or Neevu hogiri. Neevu hogiri is considered even more respectful that Neevu h
ogi.

You keep going --> Neevu hog-ta-iri.


You are going --> Neevu hog-ta-ideera.





III Person / Male / Singular


He goes -> Avanu hog-uttaane.


He is going -> Avanu hogtaiddaane or hoguttidaane.


He has gone -> Avanu hog-idaane.



III Person / Female / Singular


She goes -> AvaLu hog-uttaaLe.


She is going -> AvaLu hog-ta-iddaaLe or hoguttidaaLe.

      Why is she talking ? --> AvaLu yaake maathaduthidaale?. 

      Why did he not come ? --> Avanu yaake bandilla ?.


      Why is she not talking ? --> AvaLu yaake maathaduthaalilla ?.


      Why did you come ? --> Neevu yaake bandiri ?.


      Why are you not going ? --> Neevu yaake hogalilla ?.


      Why are you speaking ? --> Neevu yaake maathaduthayudheera ?.



2. Yaaru - Who?



      Who said that ? --> Adannu yaaru helidaru ?.
