Kannada Conversational Phrases - Part IV - Trip to Hotel

In this post we shall see some typical conversations that happens in a hotel.The words/phrases within the parenthesis adds more clarity to the sentence but we might/could ignore them while speaking.
It is typically written as a conversation between the customer and the waiter.


1. Sir , What do you want ( to eat ) ?
    Sir , Nimage ( tinnokke ) yen(u) beku.

2. Can you get me 2 idlis and a vada ?
    Iradu idli , ondhu vada kodutheera ?.

3. How many idlis come in a plate?
   Ondu platenalli eshtu idli baratte. [It is idligaLu for the plural , however we tend to skip the grammar ]

4. Why is the idli not hot?
    Yaake idli bisi illa.

5. Sorry sir, I will get you some hot idlis.
    Sorry sir,Naanu bisi idli tandu koduthini.

6.Why idli is very salty?
   Yaake idli thumba  uppaagide? [ uppu - salt - u as in Utah ]

7. Can you get me some sugar / salt ?
    Swalpa sakkare/uppu kodutheera ?

8. Give me sugar/salt.
    Sakkare/uppu kodi.

9. Can you keep some subji ?
    Swalpa sabji haaktheera ?

10. Give me some subji.
    Swalpa palya kodi.

11. Can you turn on the fan?
   Fan shuru maadtheera ?

12. Can you get me the bill?
     Bill kodutheera ?

13. You have wrongly added dose to the bill.I did not order for the dosa.
      Neevu bill nalli thappaagi dosa sersideera. Naanu dosai order maadilla.

14. What else do you want ?
       Bere yen(u) beku?

15. What else is available now ?
     Evaaga bere yen(u) ide ?

16. Can you get me some rice and curd ?
      Anna matte mosaru kodutheera? 

17. What types of dosas are available ?
      Yaava thara dosaigaLu ive ?

In this post we will see some phrases that we use often while travelling by bus.This will concentrate more on the spoken kannada.

1. When will the bus come?.
    Bus yaavaga baratte?.

2. Bus has already left.It left 5 mins earlier.
    Bus aagle bittidde.Adhu hathinaindu nimisha munche hoyittu.

3. There is a bus in another 30 mins.
    Ennu arda gantege ondu bus ide.

4. The bus will come in 10 mins.
    Bus ennu hatthu nimishadalli baratte.

5. When is the next bus to Majestic?.
    Majesticge mundina bus yaavaga ide?.

6. How many stops are there between C.V Raman Nagar and Majestic?
   C.VRaman Nagar mattu Majestic naduve (or madhya ) eshtu stopgaLu ive ?

7. There are 20 stops between C.V Raman Nagar and Majestic.
    C.VRaman Nagar mattu Majestic naduve ( or madhya ) ippatthu stopgaLu ive.

8. Can you tell me when bus reaches Domlur?.
    Bus Domlur bandaaga neevu heLtheera?

9. It is cold inside the bus.Can you close the AC nozzle?
    Nanage thumba chaLi anistaide. A/C nozzle close maadutheera?.

10. Can my son sit here ?.He will lose balance otherwise.
    Nanna maga illi koodko bahuda?. Illaandre avanige balance aagalla.

11. Sure,please come.Sit here.

12. Its raining , can you please close windows ?
     Mazhai bartaide,kitaki mucchitheera ?.

13. My son is 6 years old. Should I take full ticket for him?

14. Ok,Can you give me 2 tickets to Majestic?.

      Eshtu aagathe?.

16. I dont have change.I have 100 Rs.Is that okay?

      Naanu yaava stopnalli iLiya beku antha neevu swalpa heLutheera?.

18. You should get down at Koramangala circle.

19. Can you please hold my bag?.
      Nanna bag swalpa hiDu koLLtheera?.

20. Can you please keep my bag?.

2. via -> inda


We travelled via the underpass. -> Naavu underpassninda hogutteve.


3. Close to -> hathira


Keep close to the pavement.  -> Pavement hathira iru.


4. By means of  -> moolaka


We will get there by means of boat. -> Naavu alli  toni moolaka hoguvevu.


5. In addition to -> Kooda


In addition to soap,bring a towel. -> Soap kooda , towel tegethu-kondu ( togondu in spoken) banni.
